From Syria to Switzerland: No Borders Revisted
Happy Friday!
And I have some very happy news to share. In October 2015, I met a Syrian family near Spielfeld on the border of Slovenia and Austria. They were huddled together in the cold, waiting to cross into the first country in the EU that was even slightly capable of receiving them.
At that time, nearly 7,000 migrants from Syria, Iraq and beyond were landing in Greece every day. (Made a bit of mockery of then PM David Cameron's promise to accept 20,000 Syrian refugees by 2020...) Making a notable exception for Angela Merkel’s conscience, most European governments were doing nothing more than passing the problem as quickly as possible to their neighbours.
Anyway, Hossam told me the story of how his school had been hit by a missile and he'd decided to flee with his wife and three young children. We swapped emails, I wished him good luck and left him there, waiting.
Then, over a year later, an email arrived...
Thanks for reading! Now what?
Lunch, probably!
After that I'm meeting up with a friend I made at last year's Psychedelic Society Experience Weekend [Read my report here]. For all of you who enjoyed last week's missive, once again I can't recommend them highly enough. The Society is now taking bookings for their next trips to Amsterdam on 17-19 March and 7-9 April.
Thanks x10 for all your love for these words what I put in rows for your reading pleasure. << Excellent sentence.
Please carry on telling me how you can help me write things better and write better things. I'm very excited to be interviewing a friend who replied to last week's email arguing that psilocybin was a better medicine for microdosing than LSD - so you can look forward to that sometime in the future!
As always, if you're still buying what I'm dealing, please share the love on your social media of choice - or just forward this email like a chain letter. :)
See you at lunch! -DC
